The main purpose of this research is to explore how the conflict between traditionalism and modernity is represented in Satyajit Ray's cinemas. Also, the socio-political aspects that had influenced his works, will also be discussed. This research will employ a textual analysis based on Vladimir J. Propp's morphology of the folklore of the cinemas. To recapitulate, it dealt with the characters of the cinema and found that people were in a dilemma whether to nurture their native culture or to accept the post-colonial modern attributes. This inner dilemma in their psyche was blazed in the rational world through their actions which created conflict between traditionalism and modernity. The research will also present a deep understanding of Ray’s cinemas from a critical cultural perspective.
